As the economic downturn continues, the number of self-employed individuals in Gwangju and Jeonnam has significantly decreased, while the number of people unable to find jobs has increased.


According to the "May Employment Trends" released by the Honam Regional Statistics Office on June 11, the number of self-employed people in Gwangju stood at 139,000, down by 11,000 (7.3%) compared to a year ago. In Jeonnam, the number of self-employed was 293,000, a decrease of 7,000 (2.4%) over the same period. Combined, the two regions saw a reduction of 18,000 self-employed individuals.

The number of unemployed has increased. In Gwangju, there were 27,000 unemployed people, an increase of 1,000 (3.5%). In Jeonnam, the number surged by 8,000 (38.7%) to 28,000. The unemployment rate rose in both regions, reaching 3.3% in Gwangju and 2.7% in Jeonnam, both higher than last year.


The population aged 15 and older was 1,277,000 in Gwangju and 1,519,000 in Jeonnam, each declining by 2,000. The number of employed people in Gwangju decreased by 1,000 to 782,000, while the employment rate remained unchanged at 61.3%. In Jeonnam, the number of employed fell by 8,000 to 1,013,000, and the employment rate dropped by 0.4 percentage points to 66.7%.
