to Hold First Bilateral Talks at Upcoming G7 Summit
EU Official Highlights Korea's Strength
in Electric Vehicle Batteries and Semiconductors
An EU senior official has announced that President Lee Jaemyung and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, are scheduled to hold their first bilateral communication soon.
Maria Martin-Prat, Deputy Director-General for Trade at the European Commission, made this statement during her keynote speech at the "Korea-EU Networking Day" held in Brussels, Belgium, on the 10th (local time). The event was hosted by the Korea International Trade Association and the Embassy of Korea to Belgium and the EU.
Accordingly, President Lee is expected to meet with President von der Leyen during the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit, to which he has been invited. Although the EU is not a member of the G7, it participates in all levels of G7 meetings as a matter of custom.
Previously, on the 4th?the day President Lee's victory was confirmed?President von der Leyen mentioned via X (formerly Twitter) that "our partnership is built on shared values and interests, ranging from trade to innovation and defense," and referred to the upcoming EU-Korea summit.
Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, is also scheduled to attend this G7 summit, drawing attention to whether an "informal summit" will take place.
In her speech, Deputy Director-General Martin-Prat stated that uncertainty has increased further due to "economic coercion" and geopolitical tensions. She added, "We look forward to maintaining and expanding our relationship with Korea, which is extremely important to the EU, from trade to economic security."
She also said, "We are currently examining how foreign investment can best contribute to the EU's competitiveness and economic security," and added, "Korea is exceptionally strong and trustworthy in areas such as electric vehicle batteries and semiconductors."
