Geumseon Lee of Daejeon City Council: "Academy Facility Standards Should Be Eased to Reflect Reality" Geumseon Lee, Daejeon City Council Member / City Council

The Daejeon City Council announced that the partial amendment ordinance to the "Ordinance on the Establishment, Operation, and Private Tutoring of Academies in Daejeon," proposed by Council Member Geumseon Lee (People Power Party, Yuseong District 4th Constituency), was passed as originally drafted at the 2nd meeting of the Education Committee during the 287th 1st Regular Session on June 11.

The proposed amendment relaxes the minimum area requirements for classrooms, practice rooms, and reading rooms in international education academies and lifelong vocational education academies, reducing the standard from 100 square meters to 70 square meters.

Additionally, the standard area for educational spaces in arts-related tutoring centers, such as those for music, art, and dance, has been reduced from 60 square meters to 50 square meters.

Geumseon Lee stated, "We decided to pursue this ordinance amendment in response to the reality that the area requirements have made it difficult to establish and operate academies," adding, "By amending the ordinance, we expect to reduce the financial burden on academy founders and operators, while providing students and parents with a wider range of educational options."

The proposed amendment is scheduled to be voted on at the 3rd plenary session of the 287th regular session on June 19.
