According to reports by U.S. media outlets such as Axios on June 10 (local time), OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, will adopt cloud services from Google, its biggest competitor in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
Sources stated that OpenAI recently signed a cloud services contract with Google to meet the growing computing demands required for training its AI models.
This move is seen as OpenAI’s effort to diversify its computing resources, despite having Microsoft (MS) as its primary partner. OpenAI had previously used Azure Cloud as its dedicated infrastructure under its contract with Microsoft, but since that contract ended in January, the company has been expanding agreements with other providers.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, said in a recent interview, “I hope that Microsoft and OpenAI will continue to maintain a partnership in various ways for decades to come,” but also added, “OpenAI can have other partners, and Microsoft can have other partners as well.”
This contract is drawing particular attention because OpenAI and Google are the two biggest rivals in AI technology. OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, delivering a major blow to Google, which had been considered the leading company in AI technology at the time. Since then, with ChatGPT at the forefront, OpenAI has been threatening Google Search, which holds a 90% share of the global market.
