Chungju Plant 2 Achieves ZWTL Gold Grade
Recognized for 99% Recycling Rate and Waste Reduction Initiatives
Lotte Chilsung Beverage Sets 2030 Plastic Reduction Roadmap
On June 11, Lotte Chilsung Beverage announced that its Chungju Plant 2 has received the ZWTL (Zero Waste to Landfill) 'Gold' grade from UL Solutions, a global safety standards certification body.
UL Solutions, founded in the United States in 1894, provides testing, inspection, and certification services in various industrial safety and sustainability fields across more than 110 countries. In particular, through its 'Zero Waste to Landfill' program, UL Solutions encourages corporate circular economy activities by awarding grades based on objective verification of waste recycling rates at business sites.
Chungju Plant 2 is a key facility for Lotte Chilsung Beverage, producing flagship brands such as Chilsung Cider and Crush. According to UL Solutions' standards (UL 2799), a quantitative analysis of waste management showed a recycling rate of 99%, earning the plant the ZWTL Gold grade.
Lotte Chilsung Beverage's Chungju Plant 2 increased its recycling rate by operating a waste reduction task force that recycles by-products generated during the beer production process, such as spent grain and yeast, as resources like animal feed for farms, and by monitoring proper recycling processes through on-site inspections of final waste disposal companies. In addition, to reduce the environmental impact of its beverage and liquor production bases, the company has made waste reduction a key initiative, setting and implementing site-specific goals, systematically managing environmental issues, and establishing proactive response measures.
A representative from Lotte Chilsung Beverage stated, "The achievement of the UL Solutions ZWTL Gold grade by Chungju Plant 2 is a recognition of our various efforts to improve waste recycling rates at our facilities," adding, "We will continue to meet consumer expectations and fulfill our social responsibility to reduce environmental impact."
Meanwhile, last year Lotte Chilsung Beverage established its '2030 Plastic Reduction Roadmap,' setting a goal to reduce the use of virgin plastics derived from petroleum by 20% by 2030 compared to 2023. With the introduction of new lightweight packaging technology last year, the company reduced its plastic usage by approximately 1,220 tons.
