President Lee Directs Staff to Identify Popular Items, Including Watches, for Official Gifts
The Office of the President has stated that reports claiming President Lee Jaemyung instructed not to produce commemorative watches as gifts are not true. It was reported that President Lee directed his staff to identify popular gift items, including watches.
On June 10, Kang Yoojung, spokesperson for the Office of the President, issued a statement titled "Correction," saying, "President Lee instructed us to identify popular gift items, including watches, and these will be produced as official presidential gifts."
The related reports originated from remarks made by Jeon Hyunhee, a Supreme Council member of the Democratic Party of Korea, during her appearance on the YouTube channel <Kim Eo-jun's News Factory: Humility Is Difficult>. She recounted an episode at the presidential residence in Hannam-dong, saying, "Several people asked the president, 'Is there a Lee Jaemyung watch?'" and "The president replied, 'Why would we need something like that?'"
Historically, presidents have presented prepared gifts such as 'presidential watches' bearing their autograph to guests at official events hosted by the Office of the President.
