Texas Man Faces Severe Charges Under State's Strict Abortion Laws

A man in his 30s from the United States has been indicted on charges including murder after allegedly giving his pregnant girlfriend coffee laced with abortion pills.

According to Fox News on June 9 (local time), Justin Anthony Vanta, 38, a resident of Texas, was arrested by the Parker County Sheriff's Office on June 6.

Texas is one of 13 U.S. states that ban abortion at nearly every stage of pregnancy. In Texas, if a doctor violates the state's abortion ban, they can face up to 99 years in prison and a minimum fine of $100,000 (approximately 130 million won).

According to the sheriff's office, in October of last year, Vanta met his girlfriend, who was pregnant with his child, at a coffee shop and handed her coffee he had purchased in advance. After drinking the coffee, the girlfriend experienced excessive bleeding the next day and visited the emergency room, ultimately suffering a miscarriage.

The girlfriend suspected that Vanta had secretly put a drug to induce abortion in her coffee and reported the incident to authorities. When she first informed Vanta of her pregnancy, his response was to suggest terminating the pregnancy using abortion pills, but she refused.

Additionally, the girlfriend was convinced there was no other reason for the miscarriage, as she had confirmed the fetus was healthy and at six weeks gestation during an obstetric ultrasound just before meeting Vanta at the coffee shop.

During the investigation, Vanta admitted to ordering abortion pills using his mobile phone, but reportedly reset his phone to erase crucial evidence. Vanta has been released on bail after posting $520,000 (approximately 700 million won).
