Hwaseong City Receives "International Safe City" Certification

'Official Agreement Ceremony' Held on the 10th...
Pursuing the Establishment of a Sustainable Safe City
Mayor Myunggeun Jung: "We Will Make Citizen Life and Safety the Top Priority"

The urban safety system of Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province has received international recognition.

On the 10th, Hwaseong City held the "International Safe City Certification Agreement Ceremony" in the central conference room at City Hall, with Mayor Myunggeun Jung, City Council Chair Jeongsu Bae, International Safe City Certification Center Directors Joongpil Cho and Namsu Park, Hwaseong Osan Office of Education Superintendent Insook Kim, and Hwaseong Fire Station Chief Moonsu Ko in attendance.

This agreement ceremony was organized to officially announce the city's approval as an "International Safe City" by the International Safe Community Certification Center (ISCCC) last year.

The ISCCC is an international non-governmental organization headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. The "International Safe City" designation certifies local governments that achieve sustained results through community-wide efforts to prevent injuries, violence, and suicide?factors that significantly affect residents' daily lives and quality of life?thereby raising safety standards in all areas.

Starting with this agreement ceremony, the city plans to regularly convene the "Hwaseong Safe City Working Committee," which consists of more than 30 organizations and groups, to strengthen projects in vulnerable areas and to discover new initiatives.

The city originally planned a large-scale proclamation event for the day, but explained that it was scaled down to a simplified "agreement ceremony" in line with the intent of the International Safe City certification. The decision was made in consideration of the recent series of disasters nationwide, such as wildfires, sinkholes, and fires, and to use the reduced budget for citizen safety projects that residents can directly benefit from.

Hwaseong Mayor Myunggeun Jung stated, "This International Safe City certification is a valuable achievement accomplished together with our citizens," and added, "We will continue to prioritize the lives and safety of our citizens and strive to build an even safer and happier Hwaseong Special City."

With this International Safe City certification as a starting point, the city plans to implement more systematic safety policies across all areas?including crime prevention, traffic safety, disaster response, industrial accident prevention, and protection of children and the elderly?to establish a sustainable safe city model that meets international safety standards.
