Choi Minhee, Chairperson of the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee,
"Requested Meta to identify the cause and provide a solution"
Meta Korea is currently restoring Instagram accounts in stages following the recent mass suspension incident.
Choi Minhee, Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee (Democratic Party of Korea), stated on Facebook on June 10, "Recently, there have been incidents where accounts on Instagram and Facebook are being suspended without any apparent reason," adding, "I have requested Meta, the operator of Instagram, to identify the cause and come up with a solution."
According to Chairperson Choi, Meta Korea explained, "Meta is currently conducting a global crackdown on activities related to child and youth pornography on social networking services, including Instagram." The company added, "During this process, we have recognized that some user accounts have been excessively suspended, and we are in the process of restoring them sequentially."
Choi further stated, "Meta Korea has said that they are currently identifying the specific issues," and added, "As the Chairperson of the committee, I will continue to communicate with Meta to ensure the situation is resolved as quickly as possible and will provide further updates."
Previously, reports had spread across online communities that some users of Meta's social networking platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, were experiencing account suspensions for unknown reasons. Users claimed that, regardless of the content they posted, their accounts were suspended for alleged violations of community guidelines related to child sexual exploitation or abuse.
While there were some cases of Instagram accounts being suspended at the end of last month, most users reported a sharp increase in such incidents between June 3 and June 4.
In cases of temporary suspension, users can submit information such as an ID card, facial photo, and phone number verification to Meta’s customer support to request a review. However, some users have expressed frustration, stating that their accounts were permanently suspended after submitting a review request.
Some users have suggested that the increase in account suspensions may be due to a malfunction in Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI)-based content moderation system. They pointed out that background images, certain poses, or the degree of exposure might have been misinterpreted as serious violations.
