Gwangju Transportation Corporation, led by President Cho Ikmoon, will open subway stations as "Heat Relief Shelters" in preparation for the full onset of summer.

On June 10, Gwangju Transportation Corporation announced that it will create Heat Relief Shelters in the station concourses and open them as rest areas where local residents, including the elderly, can escape the heat, starting from the 16th.

To this end, the corporation plans to install wooden benches and large fans at 10 stations, including Yangdong Market Station, Hwajeong Station, and Ssangchon Station. It will also operate air conditioning systems according to the temperature on the day and expand convenience facilities to create a comfortable shelter. In particular, last year the corporation completed the installation of windbreak doors throughout all underground stations, which has enhanced the effectiveness of blocking heat waves and improved energy efficiency for cooling, receiving a positive response from citizens.

President Cho Ikmoon stated, "We have proactively established Heat Relief Shelters at each station to prepare for summer heat waves," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that urban railway stations are loved as spaces for daily life and culture by citizens."
