Kim Heesub: "Replacement to Be Completed by the 20th of This Month"
In response to the recent hacking incident, SK Telecom is significantly expanding on-site support by mobilizing employees from its subsidiaries, making an all-out effort to replace USIM cards. This measure is intended to address ongoing concerns about the hacking incident, as well as to resolve complaints from customers who experienced inconvenience during the USIM replacement process.
On June 10, during a daily briefing on the SKT cyber breach held at Samhwa Tower in Jung-gu, Seoul, SK Telecom announced, "We have secured an additional 1.9 million USIM cards this week and will complete all USIM replacement work by June 20."
Kim Heesub, Head of PR Center at SK Telecom, stated, "An additional 1.9 million USIM cards will be delivered by June 14," and added, "We will provide USIM replacement date notifications to reservation customers as much as possible by June 16."
According to SKT, 170,000 people replaced their USIM cards the previous day, bringing the cumulative total to 6.8 million, while the number of remaining reservation holders decreased to 2.8 million.
The number of subscribers who were notified that USIM replacement was possible but did not visit within a week was recorded at 460,000.
Kim added, "If we exclude the 460,000 subscribers who have not visited the store, the number of remaining reservation holders will soon fall below 2 million," and continued, "Once the replacement for reservation holders is complete, we will establish a system that allows even those without reservations to conveniently replace their USIM cards at stores."
As customer complaints have not completely subsided following the hacking incident, SKT is providing company-wide support for USIM replacement. Not only headquarters staff but also employees from subsidiaries are being deployed to stores nationwide to assist with the replacement process.
Lim Bongho, Head of the MNO (Mobile Network Operator) Division, stated, "Employees from subsidiaries and affiliates are providing maximum support, and since we have secured a sufficient supply, we can replace USIM cards for about 250,000 to 300,000 people per day."
SK Telecom is expected to announce the timing for resuming new business operations, its security enhancement strategies, and customer compensation measures by the end of this month.
