Johan Dalene, Winner of Nielsen Competition at 18, to Hold First Solo Recital in Korea

At the IBK Chamber Hall, Arts Center, on June 25

The Arts Center will present violinist Johan Dalene's first solo recital in Korea at the IBK Chamber Hall on June 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Dalene emerged as a rising star in the global classical music scene when he won the Carl Nielsen International Competition in 2019 at the age of 18. Following his victory, he signed an exclusive contract with the BIS label and has since demonstrated both musical depth and breadth by interpreting works by a wide range of composers, including Ravel, Sibelius, and Bacewicz, in his own unique style. In 2022, Gramophone magazine named Dalene its "Young Artist of the Year."

Dalene, a Swedish-Norwegian violinist, began playing the violin at the age of four and made his concerto debut just three years later, drawing attention in the music world for his distinctive interpretations and sensitive performances. In 2018, he was selected for Norway's Crescendo program, where he was mentored by renowned musicians such as Janine Jansen, Leif Ove Andsnes, and Gidon Kremer. He has served as artist-in-residence with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Gavle Symphony, and for the 2024-2025 season, he is artist-in-residence with the Royal Philharmonic.

For his first solo recital in Korea, Dalene will perform a diverse repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary music.

The program includes popular and iconic masterpieces such as Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 8, Tchaikovsky's "Memory of a Dear Place," and Grieg's Violin Sonata No. 2. In addition, he will present Boulanger's "D'un matin de printemps" and Ravel's "Tzigane," both representative of 20th-century sensibility, as well as the first movement "Nocturne" from Rautavaara's "Notturno e Danza," which blends romantic emotion with modern techniques. The recital will also feature the Korean premiere of "Tilted Scales" by Australian composer Frerer.

Dalene will perform on a 1725 Stradivarius known as the "Cambridge," on loan from the Anders Sveaas Charitable Foundation.

Pianist Jennifer Martensmith, who toured Australia with Dalene, will accompany him for this recital.
