Namwon City in North Jeolla Province will present the play 'Dongbaekdang; People of the Bakery' at 2 p.m. on June 14 at the Chunhyang Culture and Arts Center.
According to the city on June 10, this performance is part of a project hosted by the Arts Management Support Center and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The initiative aims to expand performance content, which has been concentrated in Seoul and the metropolitan area, to regional areas, thereby providing citizens with more opportunities to experience high-quality art closer to home.
The play 'Dongbaekdang: People of the Bakery,' which was selected for the 2025 Performing Arts Regional Distribution Support Project, tells a moving story set in the small bakery 'Dongbaekdang' in Gunsan in 1947. Against the backdrop of the turbulent post-liberation period, it depicts the lives and solidarity of ordinary people who do not lose hope despite social upheaval.
Through the city of Gunsan and the motif of 'bread,' the play warmly explores a variety of human experiences, including tradition and modernity, the individual and the community, and failure and growth.
The cast includes accomplished actors such as Hwang Sewon, winner of the Acting Award at the 41st Seoul Theater Festival, and Park Yoonjung, recipient of the Park Jungja Acting Award in 2022. The performance promises a high level of artistry and immersive storytelling.
A city official stated, "We expect this play will be more than just a viewing experience; it will be a meaningful time for citizens to find comfort and communicate through art. We will continue to attract high-quality cultural and artistic content to enhance the quality of cultural life for our citizens."
