Toss FacePay is a facial recognition-based simple payment service. After completing an identity verification process and registering their face once through the Toss application, users can make fast and convenient payments using their choice of credit card, debit card, or bank account.

Following its initial launch at convenience stores in February, Toss is now piloting FacePay at 20,000 stores across all districts in Seoul. The service will first be made available to a subset of users who have pre-registered for FacePay, and the number of eligible users will gradually be expanded.

FacePay can be used at merchants equipped with payment terminals from Toss Place, Toss's subsidiary that supplies payment terminals and POS solutions. It is available at a variety of merchants, including cafes, restaurants, hair salons, academies, and fitness centers.

To ensure secure transactions, Toss operates a 24-hour fraud detection system (FDS) to detect and respond to fraudulent transactions in real time. Through its Safe Compensation Program, Toss proactively compensates users for any losses incurred due to fraudulent transactions while using FacePay.

Before launching the service, Toss underwent a preliminary adequacy review by the Personal Information Protection Commission. This review is a system in which companies planning to launch new technologies or services work with the Commission to identify reasonable ways to apply personal information protection principles. Toss established measures to safely handle facial identification data, unique identification information, and other personal data in compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act.

A Toss representative stated, "We plan to enhance usability and stability through the pilot operation so that FacePay can quickly become part of everyday life," adding, "We will strive to provide an innovative payment experience based on a safe and convenient service."
