Kim Youngrok Vows to Nurture and Blossom the Seeds of Democracy Sown by Madam Lee Heeho and President Kim Daejung
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, pledged on June 10, marking the sixth anniversary of the passing of Lee Heeho, "I will do my utmost to cherish and nurture the seeds of democracy sown by Madam Lee and President Kim Daejung, so that the era of popular sovereignty may fully blossom."
In a memorial message on this day, Governor Kim stated, "Together with all Jeonnam residents, I deeply remember and mourn Madam Lee Heeho, who devoted her entire life to the nation and its people with unwavering conviction and love."
Madam Lee Heeho, throughout her 97 years, always stood with the people and laid the foundation for the advancement of women's rights as a first-generation women's activist. She was the lifelong companion of President Kim Daejung. Even amid the oppression of military dictatorship and the threat of death, she encouraged President Kim Daejung to "persist and fight courageously," never abandoning her faith in democracy.
Governor Kim recalled, "I remember the historic moment in February 1998, when the 'People's Government' was born through an emotional and peaceful transfer of power." He continued, "Now, in June 2025, 27 years later, we are entering a new era while reflecting on these precious values. The journey toward a nation where the people are the true owners and where citizens can be happy has begun anew, overcoming injustice and absurdity."
He added, "We will do our best together so that the dream of popular sovereignty, which began with the 'People's Government,' may fully blossom into a radiant era of popular sovereignty under the Lee Jaemyung administration." He expressed his hope, saying, "Just as Madam Lee walked her entire life with an unbreakable spirit, I hope she will now warmly watch over the vigorous journey toward a new Republic of Korea from heaven."
