ICOMOS is an international NGO of experts established in 1965 as the official advisory body to UNESCO in the field of cultural heritage, with the purpose of preserving monuments and sites worldwide.
This survey was organized to shed new light on the value of Hoamsaji after it was selected for the World Heritage Tentative List in March, and to explore future strategies for its preservation, management, and sustainable tourism utilization.
More than 10 experts in cultural heritage conservation and tourism from ICOMOS attended the site visit. Guided by a curator from the Yangju City World Heritage Promotion Team, they toured the Yangju City Hoamsaji Museum, Hoamsaji, and the Jigong, Naong, and Muhak Stupa Clusters, where they received related explanations.
Hong Miyeong, head of the Culture and Tourism Division, stated, "This on-site survey was a valuable opportunity to confirm the significance of Hoamsaji and to collaborate with experts," adding, "We will continue to strive for heritage management that harmonizes preservation and utilization."
Meanwhile, Hoamsaji is a representative archaeological site that demonstrates the exchange of Seon Buddhism culture in East Asia during the 14th century and serves as evidence of the typical temple layout of Seon Buddhist temples.
Yangju City is currently pursuing various projects, including academic research, preservation management, monitoring, and promotion, with the goal of achieving UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
