Sunchang County in North Jeolla Province is intensifying its "Spring Rural Labor Assistance" campaign until the end of this month to coincide with the full-scale farming season.

According to the county on June 9, this labor assistance initiative was established to help ensure timely farming operations and support the stable livelihood of local farmers. It reflects the reality of severe labor shortages in rural areas caused by population decline, aging, and the increasing proportion of female-headed households.

This campaign is being carried out primarily through the voluntary participation of all Sunchang County public officials, and is being promoted in cooperation with various related organizations and groups, including private social organizations, military units, educational institutions, and businesses.

The main targets for support are crops entering the harvest season, such as plums, bokbunja (Korean black raspberries), and mulberries. In addition, labor will be provided for a variety of farming tasks, including installing pepper stakes, thinning fruit, bagging fruit, plastic mulching, pest and disease control, rice transplanting, collecting agricultural waste, and maintaining farmland.

In particular, support will be focused on farms that are in genuine need of practical assistance, in order to avoid formal or ceremonial activities and instead provide effective and meaningful help.

At each site, specialists such as instructors and researchers from the Agricultural Technology Center, as well as heads of township and village counseling centers, will provide on-site guidance to participants, ensuring both the efficiency and safety of the work.

Additionally, the Department of Eco-friendly Agriculture and the industrial teams in each township and village will operate "Rural Labor Assistance Support Centers" to quickly connect farms in need of labor with organizations wishing to volunteer. Systematic support will be provided through demand-driven workforce allocation to ensure that the assistance is truly effective.

Choi Youngil, the county governor, stated, "Listening to the voices of those in the rural field and having public officials and the local community share the challenges of agriculture together is true coexistence. I hope that this labor assistance campaign will provide practical help to local farmers, and I will continue to work to make Sunchang a place where agriculture is respected."
