Anonymous and Remote Counseling Using Avatars
The Gwangju Office of Education will operate a 'Metaverse Counseling Program' for middle and high school students starting from June 9.
This program was introduced to supplement traditional face-to-face counseling and to enhance anonymity and accessibility. Students can receive counseling on a variety of topics, including depression, anxiety, emotional regulation, peer and family relationships, school life, and lifestyle habits.

Counseling will be provided by professional counseling agencies commissioned by the Office of Education, as well as at the Dongbu, Seobu, and Gwangsan Wee Centers. In a virtual space similar to an actual counseling room, students can participate as avatars or characters in one-on-one individual counseling, small group counseling (with up to eight participants), and psychological assessments. Students and parents who wish to participate can apply via phone, through their homeroom teacher, or through the Wee Class at their school.
Superintendent Lee Jeongseon stated, "The Metaverse Counseling Program is a digital-based psychological support system that allows students to share their concerns without burden," adding, "We will diversify psychological and emotional support methods to align with the era of AI and digital transformation."
