Emaciated White Jindo Found on Jeju Aquaculture Farm... Animal Groups Launch Urgent Rescue

Jindo Dog Found Tied Up and Isolated at Jeju Aquaculture Farm
"Over Two Months in Isolation... A Serious Case of Animal Abuse"
Animal Groups Plan Rescue on June 9 Due to Typhoon Concerns

An animal protection organization has launched a rescue operation after a Jindo dog was found tied up and stranded on an aquaculture farm above the sea in Jeju Island. On June 8, the animal rights group Care announced that it would work together with Haengboki-ne, a Jeju-based shelter for abandoned dogs and cats, to rescue the dog isolated at the Jeju aquaculture farm.

According to these organizations, the Jindo dog was discovered tied to a cage-shaped facility at an aquaculture farm in Jeju. It is reported that the dog had been tied up for two months, relying only on a small doghouse on the offshore facility. While other dogs guarding the farm are able to roam freely on land, this particular dog was isolated with no path connecting it to land.

Haengboki-ne stated on social media that they "received a report about a white dog tied up at a remote aquaculture farm that can only be reached by boat, so we crossed the sea ourselves to check the site." They added, "Up close, the dog looked extremely emaciated and had only a look of despair in its eyes. It was so motionless that we could not hold back our tears. How could anyone do such a thing?" The organization also noted, "A typhoon is expected to hit this sea starting tomorrow. If the dog is left as it is, it could be swept away by the waves and lose its life immediately."

Care also stated on social media, "A dog is a living being, not just a simple tool for surveillance," and pointed out that "at this aquaculture farm, the dog is being used solely as a means to prevent intrusion, without even being provided with the basic environment necessary for survival." The organization further emphasized, "Even if the owner anticipates and prepares for potential dangers in advance, this location cannot be recognized as a place suitable for raising animals. This is not just a matter of management style, but a case of serious animal abuse." Such actions may fall under "acts causing pain to animals" as stipulated in Article 10, Paragraph 2, Subparagraph 4 of the Animal Protection Act, as well as "failing to provide animals with minimum space for rearing" under Paragraph 4, Subparagraph 2 of the same article.

Due to the urgency of the weather situation, these organizations plan to carry out the rescue operation on June 9. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, a tropical depression off the eastern coast of the Philippines is gradually developing into a typhoon and may become the first typhoon of the year. The Korea Meteorological Administration noted that although there is significant uncertainty regarding the formation and path of the tropical depression, if hot, humid air flows in from the south, heavy rain could fall in many areas in the latter half of this week.
