In the second half of this year, Gyeonggi Province will open "1,000 Won Stores" at Gachon University and Pyeongtaek University. The 1,000 Won Store is a place where daily necessities and food items are sold to university students at a discount of more than 90% off market prices, for just 1,000 won, to help alleviate the cost-of-living burden in this era of high inflation. Gyeonggi Province plans to review the results of this year's program and expand the 1,000 Won Store to more universities next year.
On June 9, at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Office in Gwanggyo, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province signed a business agreement with NH Nonghyup Bank Gyeonggi Headquarters, Gyeonggi Social Welfare Council, Gyeonggi Community Chest of Korea, Gachon University, and Pyeongtaek University to operate the "University Student 1,000 Won Store" program.
The 1,000 Won Store was planned to reduce the living expenses of university students and to realize social value by linking local resources. The entire budget for the project will be funded by donations from NH Nonghyup Bank Gyeonggi Headquarters, and student organizations such as the student council will be responsible for planning and operations.
The items in the store will be stocked based on a preliminary survey of student preferences at each university, and will mainly include food items such as instant rice, canned tuna, and seasoned seaweed, as well as daily necessities like shampoo and cleansing foam. To use the store, students must go through an authentication process, such as tagging their student ID card.
Ko Youngin, Vice Governor for Economy of Gyeonggi Province, said, "The 1,000 Won Store is the first case in the country of creating social value by linking local resources within a university campus, and it is the first step toward a student-led realization of social value and solidarity. We will continue to discover new approaches to solve social problems in the future."

The University Student 1,000 Won Store is significant as it is the first outcome of the "Social Innovation Platform" introduced by Gyeonggi Province in March of this year.
The Social Innovation Platform is a "resident participation policy implementation model" designed to solve various social issues?such as climate and environmental changes, demographic changes, care issues, and regional revitalization?in creative and innovative ways.
If residents, social economy organizations, or companies wishing to cooperate on ESG propose social innovation ideas, Gyeonggi Province develops them into policies and projects, and evaluates the social value and outcomes of the initiatives.
At its first meeting in March, the Social Innovation Platform discussed solutions to the problem of university students' food expenses in this era of high inflation, and decided to operate the "University Student 1,000 Won Store."
Meanwhile, the signing ceremony was attended by Kim Seongrok, Head of NH Nonghyup Bank Gyeonggi Headquarters; Kang Kitae, President of Gyeonggi Social Welfare Council; Kwon Inuk, President of Gyeonggi Community Chest of Korea; Yoon Wonjung, Vice President of Gachon University; Kim Minseong, Acting President of the Student Council; Lee Donghyun, President of Pyeongtaek University; and Shin Yuseong, Acting President of the Student Council.
