In a statement, the Israeli military said, "As a result of operations and identification work conducted by the Southern Command, it was confirmed that the body of Muhammad Sinwar was found in a tunnel beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis." The Israeli military added that it had discovered and was analyzing additional belongings of Sinwar and Muhammad Shabana, the commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade, during the search of the tunnel.
On May 13, the Israeli military, in a joint operation with the domestic intelligence agency Shin Bet, killed Sinwar, Shabana, and others who were hiding in a Hamas command and control center beneath the European Hospital. The Israeli military fired more than 50 missiles in just 30 seconds from fighter jets, and after the initial attack, conducted several additional airstrikes around the area to prevent Hamas members from approaching to help the wounded Sinwar.
Sinwar is the brother of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas's top political leader who planned and led Hamas's surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. After Yahya Sinwar was killed by the Israeli military in October last year, Muhammad Sinwar assumed the position of leader of the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced that it had recently killed Arafat Diab, a Hamas member who participated in the 2023 Hamas surprise attack on Israel and was involved in killing many people at the Re'im kibbutz and the Nova music festival site. The military also stated that it had killed Hamas members operating in the Jabalia area in northern Gaza in airstrikes the previous day, and had bombed dozens of targets across the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours.
