Pope Leo XIV, marking one month since his election, criticized political nationalism emerging across the globe on June 8 (local time).
According to the Associated Press, Pope Leo XIV presided over the Pentecost Mass at St. Peter's Square that day and stated, "Where there is love, there can be no prejudices or the exclusive mindset that comes from political nationalism."
Pope Leo XIV did not mention any specific country or politician by name. However, in the years prior to his election as the new pope through the conclave on May 8, he had posted messages on social networking services (SNS) criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump.
Pope Leo XIV prayed for the breaking down of "barriers and walls of indifference and hatred." He also criticized "the wars that plague our world" and expressed his hope for reconciliation and dialogue in every place affected by war.
Immediately after being elected pope one month ago, Pope Leo XIV emphasized peace in his first message, saying, "May peace be with you all."
