Citizens and Distributors Join In
Singing Contest and Hands-On Events Abound
The 40th anniversary festival of Garak Market, the nation’s largest public wholesale market, will be held on June 14. Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation announced on June 8 that the “40th Anniversary Citizens and Distributors Grand Festival” will take place at a special stage and event venue near the north gate of Garak Market at 10 a.m. on that day.
Since its opening in June 1985, Garak Market has served as the largest sales outlet for domestic farmers and fishers, leading the development of agricultural and fisheries product distribution and logistics. The market handles about 20% of the nation’s agricultural and fisheries production and about 33% of the total volume handled by all 33 public wholesale markets nationwide, playing a central role in the distribution of Korean agricultural and fisheries products.
This festival will look back on Garak Market’s 40 years of development through stage videos and a photo exhibition, and reflect on the market’s role and significance in providing food for citizens. The “Garak Hanmadang,” filled with attractions, hands-on experiences, and food, will also be held.
The festival atmosphere will be enhanced by the finals of the “Garak Hanmadang Singing Contest,” featuring participation from citizens and distributors, as well as performances by invited singers Kim Hyunjung, So Chanwhee, and Kim Yeonja. A variety of booths, including food trucks and hands-on events (such as caricature drawing, DIY crafts, and event roulette), will be available for families visiting the festival.
The Corporation and Garak Market’s wholesale corporations will hold a special agricultural and fisheries product discount event to help ease the burden on citizens struggling with rising food prices and to share warmth. Six wholesale corporations in the produce category (Seoul Cheonggwa, Nonghyup Garak Gongpanjang, Joongang Cheonggwa, Donghwa Cheonggwa, Korea Cheonggwa, and Daea Cheonggwa) and three in the fisheries category (Gangdong Susan, Suhyup Garak Gongpanjang, and Seoul Geonhae) will offer a variety of agricultural and fisheries products?including watermelon, oriental melon, radish, cabbage, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, onion, anchovy, and seaweed?at discounts of 40% off wholesale prices at their booths.
Moon Youngpyo, president of Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation, said, “I hope this festival will be a meaningful occasion for both citizens and distributors to come together, reflect on the significance of Garak Market, and take a leap toward a new future.”
