CCTV Shows the Dog Came Down from the Mountain
Owner Appeared but Ultimately Gave Up Ownership
The story of a stray dog that was abandoned in the mountains, tied to a barbell plate weighing as much as 30 kilograms, has come to light belatedly.
On June 2, the owner of the stray dog shelter and adoption cafe “NeowaHamgaenyang,” identified as A, posted a photo of a dog taken in a dark alley at night on social media. At the time, the dog was drenched in rain, with two barbell plates?pieces of exercise equipment?attached to the end of its leash.
According to B, who temporarily took in the dog from A, the dog appeared in the neighborhood early last month, dragging a metal weight heavier than its own body. B said, “The dog was soaked in the rain, and local residents reported it, so it was taken to a shelter. After checking CCTV footage, it seemed the dog had dragged the metal weights down from the mountain over several days. Someone had abandoned it in the mountains.”
Afterward, the city shelter posted an adoption notice for the dog. If no one expressed interest within ten days, euthanasia was scheduled. However, a few days later, the original owner appeared. The owner claimed that the dog had been well cared for, but because there was no post to tie it to, he had temporarily fastened it to the barbell plates, and the dog had dragged them away and disappeared. However, the owner did not come to retrieve the dog before the adoption notice period ended, and ultimately relinquished ownership.
The dog was given the new name “Bell” and, after being neutered at the end of last month, was moved to the foster care center NeowaHamgaenyang. Bell is reportedly heartworm positive. B appealed, “This dog was rescued after dragging a 30-kilogram metal weight by its neck in a state of exhaustion, with its legs scraped and bleeding. The person who claimed to be the owner ultimately abandoned it again. Please show interest so Bell can receive heartworm treatment and be adopted into a good home.”
Online users reacted with outrage, leaving comments such as, “I hope this dog’s life turns around,” “Don’t live like that as a human being?you’ll be punished,” “Thank goodness the dog was rescued,” “I hope Bell finds a good owner and lives without pain for the rest of its life,” “Every time I see things like this, I can’t help but curse,” “Who in their right mind would tie a dog to a metal weight?” and “Whoever did this deserves the same treatment.”
