Strengthening Respect for National Merit Recipients
Through Expanded Veterans’ Budget and Historical Heritage Projects
On June 6, the city of Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, held a memorial ceremony at the Seonsan Memorial Tower to commemorate the 70th Memorial Day, and visited the birthplace of President Park Chunghee to honor the sacrifices of the patriotic martyrs and national heroes.

During the ceremony, Kim Jangho, mayor of Gumi, stated, "I deeply engrave in my heart the noble sacrifices of all those who devoted themselves to the nation and its people," and added, "I will make Gumi, built on the foundation of freedom and peace, an even stronger and prouder city."
In his memorial address, Mayor Kim emphasized, "Gumi is a land of loyalty that produced numerous patriots such as Hwangsan Heo Wi, Jang Jinhong, and Park Heegwang," and stressed, "The prosperity we enjoy today was made possible by the dedication of the national heroes who fell at the Nakdong River defense line during the Korean War."
The city of Gumi is also pursuing various policies to strengthen respect for national merit recipients and to preserve historical heritage.
According to the city, there are currently about 2,700 national merit recipients and their families living in the region, including 24 descendants of independence activists. The city is working to expand practical support by increasing the veterans' budget, raising allowances, and establishing dedicated parking spaces.
Additionally, Gumi is continuously promoting a variety of historical and cultural projects to carry on the spirit of the patriotic martyrs, including the production of a documentary on Hwangsan Heo Wi, the construction of the Gyeonginsa Pavilion, the maintenance of the Indong 3.12 Independence Movement Memorial Tower, and the establishment of the e-Independence Movement Memorial Hall.
Mayor Kim stated, "Diplomatic delegations from around the world are showing deep interest in Gumi's industrial development and history," and added, "All of this growth has been made possible by the noble sacrifices of the national heroes."
He continued, "We will do our utmost to ensure that national merit recipients and their families can live honorable and respected lives," and added, "We will pass on the spirit of national defense to future generations to make Gumi even stronger and prouder, and to build a greater Republic of Korea."
