Sangju City Holds 30th Environment Day Event
Citizen-Participatory Activities Foster Consensus on Climate Change Response
On June 5, Sangju City in North Gyeongsang Province held a citizen-participatory environmental event at the space under Hocheon Bridge and along the Bukcheon Trail to mark the 30th Environment Day.
Mayor Youngseok Kang of Sangju City is conducting a "Carbon Reduction Signature Campaign" and a purification plant planting experience on Bukcheon Trail in celebration of Environment Day.
The event featured a variety of hands-on activities, including free vehicle emission inspections and a campaign to promote sustainable development in daily life, raising awareness of the importance of environmental conservation.
Environment Day is a global commemoration established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Sangju City has been holding practical, citizen-focused events every year to mark the occasion.
This year’s event was co-hosted by the Sangju branch of the Gyeongbuk Association of Professional Automotive Maintenance Businesses (Carps) and the Sangju Council for Sustainable Development.
At the space under Hocheon Bridge, free vehicle emission inspections were provided for citizens, and voluntary checks were encouraged for vehicles suspected of exceeding emission standards. Some consumable items, such as washer fluid, were also replaced free of charge on site, receiving a positive response from citizens.
On Bukcheon Trail, citizen-participatory campaigns such as the "Carbon Reduction Signature Campaign," a "Purification Plant Planting Experience," and a "Climate Change Photo Exhibition" were held. The photo exhibition displayed images highlighting the severity of the climate crisis, providing an opportunity to raise public awareness about environmental conservation.
Mayor Youngseok Kang of Sangju City said, "I hope this Environment Day event will give citizens another opportunity to reflect on the value of our one and only Earth," and called for "greater interest and participation in practicing sustainable environmental conservation in daily life."
Free vehicle emission inspections were conducted for citizens, encouraging voluntary checks for vehicles suspected of exceeding emission standards.
