Reasons Such as "Failure to Comply with Community Guidelines"
Recently, a large number of Instagram accounts have reportedly been suspended both domestically and internationally without any specific reason, leading to growing confusion among users.
According to Yonhap News on June 5, a KakaoTalk open chatroom titled "Instagram Temporary Restriction, Permanent Suspension, and Deactivation Victims Group," consisting of about 1,000 domestic Instagram users, has been created. The participants in the chatroom are users who have recently experienced account suspensions on Instagram, and they are currently discussing possible responses to the situation.
According to the media, Instagram has blocked these accounts for reasons such as "failure to comply with community guidelines" and "failure to comply with community guidelines regarding account integrity." It was also reported that the notifications sent by Instagram included a statement that "if the user does not request a review within 180 days, the account will be permanently deactivated."
This phenomenon appears to have started at least since the end of last month, and some users claim that there was a large-scale increase in account suspensions between June 3 and 4. In addition, there have been cases where accounts linked to Instagram, such as Facebook and Threads, were suspended simultaneously. Facebook, Threads, and Instagram are all subsidiaries of the American IT giant Meta.
Some users who have experienced account suspensions are speculating that there may be a problem with the content-related artificial intelligence (AI) operated by Meta, the company behind Instagram. However, others are countering this by stating that the sanctions are justified, as they were imposed to block content that violates Instagram's content policies, such as terrorism or child exploitation. Furthermore, on major overseas online communities such as Reddit, there have been continued complaints from users who have experienced account suspensions for similar reasons.
A representative from Meta's Korea office told Yonhap News, "It is difficult to provide an exact answer as the matter is still under investigation."
