Korea Maritime Institute Opens Arctic Sea Route and Charts the Future of Maritime and Fisheries with AI

Establishment and Operation of the Arctic Route Support Team and Marine Fisheries AI Transformation Support Team

The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), led by President Cho Jeonghee, has established two dedicated organizations to concretize future strategies in the maritime and fisheries sector and systematically support the new government’s policy agenda.

The newly established Arctic Route Support Team and Marine Fisheries AI Transformation Support Team are research organizations focused respectively on advancing into the Arctic route and accelerating digital transformation in the maritime and fisheries sector. These teams are expected to further strengthen the institute’s future-oriented research and its capacity to support government policies.

As the melting of Arctic sea ice accelerates and conflicts among the United States, China, and Russia over the Arctic intensify, the strategic importance of the Arctic route is growing. In response, the institute has formed the Arctic Route Support Team, centered around the Polar Strategy Research Office, and has begun developing the “Mid- to Long-Term Roadmap for Advancing into the Arctic Route (2026-2050).”

Through this roadmap, the institute will present mid- to long-term plans in various fields, including policy, industry, diplomacy and security, regional economic development (GRDP), and international cooperation. At the same time, it will carry out practical tasks to enhance policy feasibility, such as reviewing relevant laws, ordinances, and systems, operating consultative bodies with related organizations, and hosting forums.

With artificial intelligence (AI) technology rapidly spreading across the entire maritime and fisheries sector, the institute has launched the AX Support Team to actively support digital transformation in areas such as maritime, fisheries, shipping, and ports.

The AX Support Team will internally conduct policy trend analysis, AI-based data verification, education and manual preparation, and chatbot development. Externally, it will engage in a wide range of activities, including establishing technology strategies and supporting private companies, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and related government agencies.

Through these two organizations, the institute aims to simultaneously strengthen the sector’s strategic assets and digital capabilities, serving as a bridge between future industries and national policy.

Cho Jeonghee, President of the Korea Maritime Institute, stated, “The Arctic route is a strategic asset of the 21st century, where shipbuilding, shipping, and port industries intersect with security and climate change. It is a task directly linked to the future maritime sovereignty of the Republic of Korea.” He added, “The institute will actively support the nation’s entry into the Arctic by establishing an effective roadmap and making policy proposals.”

He continued, “AI is a key driver that will accelerate innovation in the maritime and fisheries industry,” emphasizing, “We will provide proactive support so that the AX Support Team can make substantial contributions to both government policy and the industrial field.”
