Press Conference Held After Paying Respects at the May 18th Democratic Cemetery
The Democratic Party of Korea's 'Real Republic of Korea Gwangju Election Committee' held a press conference on the morning of the 5th after paying respects at the National May 18th Democratic Cemetery, expressing gratitude to the citizens of Gwangju. The Democratic Party of Korea's 'Real Republic of Korea Gwangju Election Committee' emphasized on the 5th, "We will firmly establish the democracy that the citizens of Gwangju have protected with their own hands as an unshakable foundation, and we will surely realize a true Republic of Korea where only the people are happy."
On the morning of the same day, after paying respects at the National May 18th Democratic Cemetery, the Gwangju Election Committee held a press conference and stated, "We have achieved a historic victory in the 21st presidential election. We would like to express our gratitude to the citizens of Gwangju."
Attending the press conference were Yang Bunam, Chief Standing Election Committee Chairperson of the Gwangju Election Committee; Min Hyungbae, Jung Junho, Jeon Jinsook, and Park Kyuntaek, Standing Election Committee Chairpersons; Kang Gijung, Mayor of Gwangju; Kim Ikang, Head of Seo District; Kim Byungnae, Head of Nam District; as well as about 200 elected officials of the Democratic Party of Korea.
Through the press statement, the Gwangju Election Committee said, "In the horrific reality on December 3 last year, when there was an attempt to seize control of the National Assembly through martial law, it was Gwangju that rose up first," and added, "In the streets and in the squares, through struggle and perseverance, the people ultimately delivered a historic judgment with their own hands on June 3."
The committee continued, "Each and every vote cast by the citizens of Gwangju came together to restore the collapsed constitutional order and opened the path toward recovery of people's livelihoods and national unity," and stated, "That determination and aspiration made Lee Jaemyung the 21st President."
The Gwangju Election Committee also pledged, "The Democratic Party of Korea will achieve national unity and innovation through continuous communication with the people," and vowed, "We will not become complacent with the presidential election victory but will approach state administration with humility."
