Exhibition of Local Clothing and Everyday Items
on Display Until December 7
Starting from June 5 until December 7, the city of Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, will hold a special exhibition titled "Hem of Clothing, Hem of Memory" at the Special Exhibition Hall of the Hwaseong City History Museum.
This exhibition sheds light on the lives and tastes of Hwaseong residents through clothing and everyday items that have been meticulously restored based on records such as documents, photographs, and artifacts.
The exhibition is organized into four themes and has been curated with a focus on realistic reconstructions that bring records to life. By combining documentary materials with costume artifacts, the exhibition aims to help visitors understand and appreciate traditional attire in a more vivid way.
Part 1, "Colors Dressed by Records: The Restoration of Choi Suk's Attire," introduces three original restored items of Joseon Dynasty military official attire?Cheollik, Kwaeja, and Sochangui?along with related excavation materials, all unearthed from the tomb of Choi Suk (1636-1698) in Gupori, Hwaseong.
Part 2, "Etiquette Shaped by Records: Reenactment of Rituals and Attire," features a historically verified Simui, Daedae, and Bokgeon, recreated based on the old document "Simuicheoksu," as well as scaled-down replicas of male and female burial clothing sets crafted according to the document "Suuidanja."
Part 3, "Moments Left by Records: Wearing the Era of Change," allows visitors to compare more than 20 photographs of the Hwaseong region taken in the 1900s by the St. Ottilien Monastery in Germany, group photos from Hwaseong, and related costume artifacts.
Part 4, "Paths Created by Records: Tastes Blooming Through Clothing," is an interactive experience where visitors can choose attire that suits them and discover their personal tastes through a video experience. There will also be a photo card giveaway event featuring costume character illustrations.
The city plans to operate special lecture programs in connection with the exhibition in the future.
Jung Sanghun, head of Hwaseong's Cultural Heritage Division, stated, "This is the first special exhibition to be held since the city was promoted to a special-status city, and it will serve as an opportunity to newly reflect on the region's history and identity through the clothing and scenes of life preserved in records."
