First Supreme Council Meeting of the Democratic Party as Ruling Party After Lee's Election on the 5th
The Democratic Party of Korea held its first Supreme Council meeting as the ruling party since the June 3 presidential election. The party, together with the Lee Jaemyung administration, emphasized national unity and an end to internal strife, vowing to "create a true Republic of Korea."
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido on June 5, Park Chandae, acting party leader and floor leader, stated, "The Democratic Party is now the ruling party jointly responsible for state administration. We will immediately address the people's livelihood issues, overcome the national crisis that has led to internal strife, and pursue economic growth and national unity." A new banner with the phrase "We will create a true Republic of Korea," which was a key slogan of President Lee Jaemyung during the presidential campaign, was hung at the back of the meeting room.
Jeon Hyunhee, Supreme Council member, also said, "As a partner in the Lee Jaemyung administration's governance, the Democratic Party will do its utmost with a strong sense of responsibility," and added, "We will actively support the Lee Jaemyung administration's Emergency Economic Response Task Force (TF) so that it can pave the way for restoring the people's livelihoods."
Jeon further stated, "The first appointments of the Lee Jaemyung administration are based on loyalty, expertise, and competence, and are intended to restore Korea, which is in crisis, to a normal state." She called on the People Power Party, now the opposition, to "set aside partisanship and political interests and demonstrate a willingness for dialogue and compromise for the normalization of state affairs."
There were also criticisms regarding the uncooperative attitude of the previous administration, as the new government was launched without a transition committee. She said, "The previous administration did not leave behind any staff for the transition, and turned the Yongsan office into a grave, leaving no computers, printers, or writing tools. Civil servants dispatched for the election returned to their original ministries, and special appointees resigned and disappeared without notice."
She continued, "The Democratic Party will never overlook the clear obstruction of the immediate launch of the new government without a transition committee, and those who gave such orders will be held accountable. Now is a golden time to overcome the failures of the previous administration, and it is a period when we must focus all efforts on overcoming internal strife and normalizing state affairs. Therefore, I urge all public officials on the front lines to actively cooperate."
The Democratic Party announced its intention to handle the special prosecutor bills on internal strife, Kim Keonhee, and Chae Haebyung, as well as the Prosecutor Disciplinary Act, at the plenary session scheduled for the day. Acting leader Park explained, "The Lee Jaemyung administration, a government born from the will of the people and based on popular sovereignty, will uphold justice and the rule of law, and work for the recovery of people's livelihoods and national unity. The Democratic Party will take on this responsibility with an attitude of unlimited accountability."
