Kim Taeyeon, a Master's student in the Department of Marine Biology at Pukyong National University (President Bae Sanghoon, Pukyong National University), has been selected as a 'Young Scientist' to participate in the 2025 Annual Meeting of the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES-2025).

Kim Taeyeon was chosen through the selection process for the PICES Young Scientist Support Program, which took place during the 2025 Spring Meeting of the Korean Society of Oceanography held at BEXCO in Busan from May 8 to May 10.

PICES is an intergovernmental international organization established for the effective management of the marine environment and academic exchange in the North Pacific region. Its member countries include six nations bordering the North Pacific: Korea, the United States, Canada, Russia, China, and Japan.

As a result of this selection, Kim Taeyeon will attend the PICES Annual Meeting scheduled to be held in Yokohama, Japan, in November, with support provided for airfare, accommodation, and registration fees.

In the selection process, which aimed to choose approximately five young scientists in the marine field from across the country, Kim Taeyeon gave an oral presentation of his research, 'A stock assessment of the chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) in Korea with environmental conditions being incorporated,' and received high marks for his performance.

In this research, he conducted a stock assessment of chub mackerel that incorporated spatiotemporal factors. He also presented trends in plankton, the main food organism, and in the recruitment population, thereby demonstrating the relationship between these factors and earning recognition for his research achievements.
