Beyond Chatbots, the AGI Era Nears... ChatGPT's Future Revealed in Confidential Documents

OpenAI Plans to Evolve ChatGPT into a "Super Assistant"
Aims to Go Beyond Chatbots and Integrate with Various Platforms

OpenAI is rapidly approaching the era of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), an AI capable of thinking like a human, surpassing the current level of artificial intelligence. OpenAI has announced its plan to evolve ChatGPT into a "Super Assistant" in the first half of this year. The goal is for ChatGPT to serve as an assistant that naturally connects users to the internet, going beyond the capabilities of a traditional chatbot.

According to The Verge, an IT-focused media outlet, this information was included in an internal strategy document written by OpenAI in December of last year. OpenAI classified the document, titled "ChatGPT: H1 2025 Strategy," as highly confidential. Portions of the document were released, with some content redacted, during the ongoing antitrust lawsuit between the U.S. Department of Justice and Google.

OpenAI assessed that ChatGPT is already performing roles beyond that of a chatbot. It is being widely used not only for everyday tasks such as answering questions or assisting with writing, but also for more specialized activities like coding by developers or analyzing professional data.

Furthermore, OpenAI outlined its goal to develop ChatGPT into a "Super Assistant" within the first half of this year. This means advancing the system to a level where it can understand users' behaviors and interests, and assist with any task that can be performed on a computer, not just simple work support. The company also evaluated that OpenAI's inference model "o3," which was released at the time the report was written, had become intelligent enough to fulfill the role of a Super Assistant.

OpenAI defined the Super Assistant as an intelligent assistant with "T-shaped skills." T-shaped skills refer to having broad knowledge across various fields while also possessing deep expertise in a specific area. Regarding T-shaped skills in the AI domain, OpenAI explained, "It means having both the skills necessary for everyday tasks and advanced expertise for challenging tasks that people believe to be impossible." In addition, as an assistant, it emphasized that ChatGPT should be available not only on its website and app, but also across various platforms, including Apple's voice assistant Siri.

OpenAI also assessed that ChatGPT currently holds an advantage in the AI agent market. AI services that OpenAI identified as competitors include Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), Copilot (Microsoft), and Meta AI (Meta). OpenAI stated, "ChatGPT is leading in this field, but we cannot be complacent," adding, "We need the best free model, user interface (UI), and a strong brand."

The company predicted that, as the evolution into a Super Assistant accelerates, the range of competitors will broaden further. Since the assistant will help users with all types of tasks, search engines, platform companies, and even real-life human interactions could become competitors. OpenAI emphasized a strategy of attracting users by expanding use cases in this wider competitive landscape. It also noted that, since ChatGPT operates on a subscription-based model rather than relying on advertising revenue, it can maintain flexibility in AI design.

OpenAI also argued that big tech companies with operating systems (OS) and search engines, such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft (MS), must guarantee users the freedom to choose their AI. These companies have dominant OS platforms?Android (Google), iOS (Apple), and Windows (MS)?and each pre-installs its own AI service on its OS. Google and MS also use only their own AI services in their search engines. Targeting these companies, OpenAI asserted, "Users should be able to choose their own AI assistant," and added, "They should not be forced to use a particular AI without being offered a fair alternative."

Meanwhile, in the report, OpenAI specifically identified AI services that could pose a serious threat to ChatGPT this year, but those sections were redacted. Details regarding the specific strategies to be implemented in the first half of this year were also not disclosed.
