Landslide-Prone Areas and Disaster-Vulnerable Reservoirs
Namwon City in North Jeolla Province is conducting on-site inspections of disaster-prone areas to prepare for natural disasters such as heavy rainfall and typhoons during the summer season.
According to the city on June 4, this inspection was initiated as a preemptive measure in response to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast of increased heavy rainfall this summer. The goal is to establish a proactive disaster response system for vulnerable facilities and to minimize casualties and property damage.
In particular, the mayor personally visited the sites with officials from disaster safety-related departments and local experts to inspect risk factors. They closely examined the safety management status at construction sites, the operation of drainage facilities, and the potential for landslides.
The inspection targets included: ▲steep slopes with a high risk of landslides during heavy rainfall; ▲aging disaster-prone reservoirs; ▲major river maintenance project sections currently under repair; and ▲drainage pump stations to prevent flooding in low-lying areas. Areas with a high risk of damage due to recent abnormal weather events were prioritized for inspection.
During the inspection, the team listened to opinions from local residents and discussed mid- to long-term improvement measures for sections that have experienced repeated damage. Construction personnel were also urged to manage schedules thoroughly and strictly adhere to safety regulations.
Mayor Choi Kyungsik stated, "Prevention is the best response to disasters. We will thoroughly inspect and address even the smallest risk factors in advance so that citizens can spend the summer with peace of mind."
Meanwhile, based on the results of this inspection, the city plans to promptly carry out emergency measures and supplementary construction in vulnerable areas and to strengthen the emergency response system for natural disasters during the summer, ensuring 24-hour disaster response readiness.
