On June 4, Gwangju City announced that it will conduct joint public-private safety inspections of 330 disaster-vulnerable facilities by July 31, in order to prevent accidents and ensure citizen safety ahead of the summer rainy season.
This inspection will target facilities with a high risk of accidents during the rainy season, such as steep slopes, bridges, underpasses, and river facilities. The joint inspection team will consist of officials from the city, local districts, and private experts.
The city will focus on checking for defects such as subsidence, cracks, and collapse in structures and facilities, as well as the drainage functionality and maintenance status of the facilities, the operation of various equipment including pumps, and the installation of safety facilities such as protective barriers and warning signs in hazardous areas.
If minor issues that can be addressed on-site are found during the inspection, they will be corrected immediately. For facilities with a high risk of accidents, emergency measures will be taken first, followed by prompt dissemination of risk information, prohibition or restriction of use, and subsequent follow-up management and tracking.
Additionally, the city plans to strengthen its emergency communication system to enable prompt sharing of information and emergency response between the public and private sectors, in preparation for any disaster situations that may occur during the rainy season safety management period.
Bae Bokhwan, Director of the Citizen Safety Office, stated, "As extreme weather events such as localized heavy rain become more frequent due to climate change, proactive safety inspections and enhanced monitoring activities are essential. We will do our utmost to prioritize citizen safety through thorough inspections and effective response."
