Gumi City Achieves 'Zero Infection,' Emerges as Model City for Epidemic Prevention at 2025 Asian Athletics Championships

A Large-Scale International Event With Over 2,000 Participants From 43 Countries
Not a Single Case of Infectious Disease Reported

Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province has successfully concluded the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, which hosted over 2,000 participants from 43 countries, without a single case of infectious disease, establishing itself as a model city for epidemic prevention at international events.

This event was a large-scale gathering that brought together thousands of athletes, officials, and spectators from across Asia. From the entry stage to the conclusion of the competition, Gumi City operated a proactive and systematic epidemic prevention and response system.

In particular, the city established an infectious disease surveillance system focused on high-density venues such as the Indong Night Market and the Asian Food Festa, and worked in cooperation with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency to implement real-time monitoring and emergency response measures.

Comprehensive prevention measures were also implemented, including environmental inspections of the athletes’ village and accommodation facilities, securing negative pressure isolation beds, and operating a 24-hour emergency response system. Volunteers and staff received infectious disease prevention training, and multilingual prevention leaflets and sanitary supplies were distributed to ensure the safety of all participants.

During the event, intensive disinfection of major venues and facilities was carried out, along with daily health monitoring. A cooperative system was maintained to enable immediate response in the event of an infectious disease occurrence. Participating athletes and officials evaluated the event as “one of the safest international competitions ever held.”

Building on this achievement, Gumi City plans to further strengthen its infectious disease response capabilities to ensure flawless hosting and attraction of future international events.

Lim Myungseop, Director of the Gumi Public Health Center, stated, “Thorough preparation and cooperation from citizens made it possible to achieve a zero-infection event,” adding, “We will continue to enhance our epidemic prevention system to make Gumi even safer in the future.”
