Official Selection of the 46th Seoul Theater Festival
The creative group Sangsangdumok will present the play "Sara in Wonderland" from June 6 to 15, 2025, at Seoul Theater 202 in the Seoul Theater Creation Center, as an official selection of the 46th Seoul Theater Festival.
"Sara in Wonderland" explores the prejudice and realities faced by families of people with schizophrenia. The play was selected as one of the "2023 Performing Arts Creation Support Project’s New Works of the Year" and premiered last year. At the time, it was praised for addressing both societal and individual perceptions of schizophrenia.
The play uses the format of a lecture performance to overcome prejudice against schizophrenia, providing accurate information about the illness and an objective approach to understanding it. It also maximizes the theatricality unique to the stage through a chorus format, and features sensory illustrated videos and live camera footage to express the unconscious.
The production is by Sangsangdumok, with direction by Choi Chieun, a poet-turned-playwright and director. The play unfolds poetic language and personal confessions through delicate metaphors and symbolism.
For certain performances, smart subtitle glasses will be provided for deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members as well as foreigners, offering both Korean and English subtitles. In addition, there will be one relaxed performance, designed to ensure a comfortable viewing experience for all audience members, regardless of disability. During this relaxed performance, a mental health professional will be present to respond to any emergencies or unexpected situations that may arise due to psychological factors during the show.
