Reinterpreting Byeolsingut and Ssitgimgut through a Contemporary Lens

The National Intangible Heritage Center will present a performance titled "The Dignity of Traditional Performing Arts" at the main Eolssumaru Grand Theater in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, for two days starting June 13. The performance will reinterpret Byeolsingut, a ritual wishing for the prosperity and abundance of a village, and Ssitgimgut, a ritual for sending off the deceased, through a contemporary lens.

Kim Younghee, honorary holder of the East Coast Byeolsingut, which is recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Park Byungwon, holder of the Jindo Ssitgimgut, will take the stage, demonstrating the tradition of communal solidarity and healing embodied in gut rituals. Detailed explanations will also be provided to help the audience understand the significance of each performance.

The performance is free of charge. Reservations can be made on the National Intangible Heritage Center website starting at 9 a.m. on June 4.
