Pledges to Build a Society that Guarantees the Lives of Vulnerable Groups

Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, stated on June 2, "A strong social safety net is a promise that the nation must uphold," expressing his commitment to realizing a 'Basic Society.' Lee pledged, "I will guarantee the people's right to life and safety, as well as a minimum standard of human dignity."

On this day, the day before the main voting for the presidential election, Lee referred to the 2014 Songpa three sisters case and the recent Iksan mother and daughter case through social networking services (SNS), pointing out, "Although more than ten years have passed, our society has failed to protect them." He added, "Reality is becoming even harsher," and emphasized, "We cannot abandon the weak and powerless people in the face of such realities."

He declared, "I will realize a 'Basic Society' in which the national community takes responsibility for the people's basic lives," and promised, "I will build a country where no one gives up their life due to poverty or destitution, and where everyone can live with dignity." Lee also stated, "To ensure that socially disadvantaged and vulnerable groups do not give up on life due to economic hardship, I will create a society where everyone is guaranteed at least a minimum standard of living, and establish a 'strong social safety net' so that we can protect each other in times of crisis."

He said, "Politics should be a tool for changing lives," and added, "Making today, the day you are enduring, a little better?that is the reason politics exists." He continued, "I will ensure that the countless 'nameless sufferings' that exist now are transformed from despair and resignation into hope. I will raise the desire to live well and change politics into one that saves lives."

Lee also stated, "I will pursue politics that has a positive impact on the people's livelihoods," and pledged, "I will keep my promise to build a country where everyone prospers together and where the life of every single citizen is respected."

On May 22, he also presented the direction of welfare policy aimed at a broad 'Basic Society,' ranging from an income guarantee system for each stage of life to access to artificial intelligence (AI). At that time, Lee said, "We will move toward a society where the national community is responsible for the people's basic lives?a Basic Society," and added, "In all areas of life such as housing, healthcare, care, education, and public services, we will fully realize all the rights of the people as stipulated in our Constitution, and open a 'Basic Society' in which the state and society share responsibility." To this end, he promised, "We will establish a dedicated national institution for the realization of a Basic Society and build a public-private cooperation system."
