Uljugun in Ulsan has launched an architectural design competition for the construction of the 'Mountain Extreme Center' within the Yeongnam Alps Complex Welcome Center.
This marks the full-scale initiation of a project to create an experiential base in response to increasing demand for mountain tourism.
On June 2, Uljugun announced, "With the growing popularity of climbing culture among young people and the rise in mountain leisure sports activities, we are promoting an indoor adventure-style experience center that will offer a variety of mountain-related activities." The county also stated, "The design competition has started today."
This project was selected in 2023 as part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Southern Region Metropolitan Tourism Development Project, securing 50% of its funding from the national government. The total project cost is 39.5 billion won, with both national and county funds being invested. Construction is scheduled to begin next year, with completion expected in 2027.
The 'Mountain Extreme Center' will be built on a site of 55,789 square meters, with a total floor area of 6,260 square meters, within the Yeongnam Alps Complex Welcome Center site at 517 Deungeok Alps-ri, Sangbuk-myeon, Uljugun.
The design competition will be publicly announced until June 16, and applications will be accepted at the Facility Support Division of Uljugun Office on June 17. A site briefing session will be held on June 25, and submissions for the competition will close on August 19. The final winning design will be announced on September 2, following the first and second rounds of evaluation.
Prizes will be awarded to the top entries according to their ranking, and the grand prize winner will be granted the design contract. For more details, inquiries can be directed to the Facility Support Division of Uljugun.
An official from Uljugun stated, "The Mountain Extreme Center will become a new tourism landmark for Uljugun," adding, "We hope it will help revitalize the local economy through the synergy created in connection with the Complex Welcome Center."
