"Stress Relief": Office Workers Prefer Dance Music on Their Way Home... What About the Morning Commute?

Kakao Entertainment's music platform Melon released the results of an analysis of weekday commuting hour data for this year through its 'Data Lab' on May 30, with the findings made public on June 2.

On weekdays, streaming activity peaked at 8 a.m. and between 5 and 6 p.m., which are typical commuting hours. This suggests that users listen to music on Melon during their commute for comfort and motivation. In fact, the 8 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. time slots accounted for about 19% of total daily streaming volume. Nearly one-fifth of all streaming occurred during just one-eighth of the day’s 24 hours.

During weekday commuting hours this year?8 a.m. for the morning commute and 6 p.m. for the evening commute?a total of 2,859,000 songs were played. The cumulative number of plays reached 1,252,690,000. Based on an average playtime of three minutes per song, this amounts to approximately 62,630,000 hours.

The most popular genres among Melon users during their commute were ballad, dance, and rock·metal, in that order. Comparing the streaming ratios of these three genres (relative to all genres), ballad and rock·metal were played more often during the morning commute, while dance accounted for a larger share during the evening commute.

It can be interpreted that people start their day with slower-tempo ballads and rock·metal, and unwind after work with upbeat dance music.

In terms of listener numbers, the electronica genre saw a noticeable increase in the evening. Compared to the morning, the number of listeners for international electronica rose by 31%, and for domestic electronica by 29%, clearly showing that people seek out energy-boosting music after work.

The top three most beloved artists during commuting hours were G-Dragon, Day6, and aespa, maintaining the same ranking for both morning and evening commutes. For the morning commute, IU and IVE ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, while for the evening commute, IVE and IU switched places. This indicates that faster-tempo music is more popular during the evening commute.

Girl groups such as Babymonster, NewJeans, and Kiss of Life saw a particularly notable increase in listeners during the evening commute this year. Conversely, artists like Jung Eunji and Tei, who are known for their calm and warm songs, experienced a greater increase in listeners during the morning commute. For all these artists, the number of morning listeners exceeded that of the evening by more than 10%.

Meanwhile, Melon Data Lab is a content series that analyzes and records the impressive achievements and significant results of domestic and international artists on a monthly basis. The full details of this commuting music data analysis by Melon Data Lab can be found in the 'Magazine' section of the Melon app and on Melon's official social networking service (SNS) channels.
