A Total of 1,480 Hanok Experts Trained
Government Program Fosters Specialists in Traditional Architecture
The government has launched a renewed effort to train professionals specializing in traditional Hanok design and construction. The strategy is to foster Hanok as a unique regional architectural asset, utilizing it as a hub for urban regeneration, tourism revitalization, and balanced regional development.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on June 1 that it will begin accepting applications for the 'Hanok Design and Construction Management Training Program' starting June 2. The total tuition, amounting to 300 million won, is free of charge, while a 300,000 won practical training fee must be covered by participants. The program will be held every Saturday starting next month.

Since 2011, the government has consistently trained professionals with the goal of popularizing and industrializing Hanok. This year, Myongji University (design) and Jeonbuk National University (design and construction) have been designated as training institutions. To date, a total of 1,480 people have completed the program, and many graduates are now actively working in the field, winning Hanok design competitions and securing construction contracts.
The Hanok design program covers research and development (R&D) technologies such as seismic design. Graduates' works are also exhibited and published. The Hanok construction management program focuses on practical skills such as process management and quantity calculation, and includes hands-on training in wood crafting (Chimok) and on-site experience.
Nam Hae-kyung, head of the Hanok Architecture Project Group at Jeonbuk National University, said, "Recently, more young people are participating," and added, "We will support anyone, regardless of age, to grow into a Hanok expert."

Lee Byungmin, Director of the Architectural Culture and Landscape Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "The Hanok landscape, which embodies our unique aesthetic, is becoming a hub for 'cities people want to visit and regions where they want to stay.' He emphasized, "Above all, Hanok experts are essential to drive regional revitalization in harmony with urban architectural design."
