The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education is implementing a building safety management service for 423 schools in the province that contain asbestos-containing buildings.
According to the current Asbestos Safety Management Act, asbestos-containing school buildings are required to undergo a risk assessment every six months, evaluating factors such as the condition of damage and the potential for asbestos to become airborne. The law also stipulates that any damage to asbestos-containing buildings must be immediately addressed through removal of the cause and repair measures.
This service will be carried out in several stages: selecting asbestos-specialized agencies through regional bidding; inspecting the condition of damage and the potential for asbestos to become airborne in asbestos-containing buildings; immediately repairing schools identified as needing maintenance based on the risk assessment results; and conducting post-management based on analysis of the service results.
The provincial office plans to make further efforts to establish a more professional and safe asbestos safety management system, including continued support for maintenance and management tasks until all asbestos is completely removed from schools, in order to create a safe and healthy educational environment.
Meanwhile, the school asbestos building safety management service has been supported annually since 2023, after the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education became the first in the nation to launch a pilot program. This was done to address management deficiencies caused by a lack of expertise among school staff.
