The Navy announced on May 31 that it has formed a joint civilian-military accident investigation committee to look into the crash of the P-3CK maritime patrol aircraft, and has begun investigative activities.
The committee is chaired by the head of the Navy Safety Division and is composed of members from the Navy Safety Division, Investigation Division, Maritime Science Investigation Center, the Air Force Aviation Safety Division, Army aviation authorities, the Korea Coast Guard, and aircraft maintenance companies, forming a joint civilian-military team.
Experts from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), who were responsible for modifying the aircraft when the P-3 was first introduced to Korea and have handled major overhauls since, are also participating.
The military plans to bring in additional experts from relevant agencies and civilian aviation specialists if necessary for the ongoing investigation.
A Navy official explained, "In order to ensure transparency, reliability, and fairness in the investigation, we included not only other military branches but also civilian experts on the committee."
