'Arrest Warrant Hearing Tomorrow for Election Official Accused of Proxy Voting Under Husband's Name'

The police have applied for an arrest warrant for an election official who cast a proxy vote under their spouse's name on the first day of early voting for the 21st presidential election.

On May 31, the Suseo Police Station in Seoul announced that they had requested an arrest warrant the previous day for an individual identified as Park, who is suspected of violating the Public Official Election Act by engaging in proxy voting. The prosecution has filed for the warrant, and Park's pre-arrest interrogation (warrant review) will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 1 at the Seoul Central District Court.

Park is accused of using her husband's identification to obtain a ballot and cast a proxy vote at the Daechi 2-dong early voting station in Gangnam, Seoul, at around 12:00 p.m. on May 29, and then voting again under her own identification five hours later.

The police responded at 5:11 p.m. that day after receiving a report from an observer from independent presidential candidate Hwang Kyoan's camp, who claimed that "a voter voted twice," and immediately arrested Park.

She is known to be a contract worker at the Gangnam District Public Health Center and was appointed as an election official responsible for issuing ballots to voters during the presidential election.
