People Power Party: "'Lee Jae Myung Son Defamation Ban' Is Tailor-Made Bulletproof Legislation... Must Be Withdrawn Immediately"

"An Unconstitutional Outrage That Infringes on Freedom of Expression"

The People Power Party criticized the "Partial Amendment to the Information and Communications Network Act" proposed by Democratic Party lawmakers on the 31st, calling it the "Lee Jae Myung Son Defamation Prohibition Act" and describing it as "a tailor-made bulletproof legislation designed to block fatal public opinion backlash."

The Legislative Manipulation Prevention Committee of the Central Election Countermeasures Committee of the People Power Party issued a statement on this day, saying, "If this bill passes, anyone in the country who mentions the misconduct of candidate Lee Jae Myung or his family online could be branded as spreading 'falsehoods,' 'agitation,' or 'inciting crime,' and become subject to criminal punishment."

Previously, Jo Incheol and 10 other Democratic Party lawmakers proposed two amendments to the Information and Communications Network Act, which would prohibit the distribution of information that creates or spreads false or manipulated information.

The amendments specify that illegal information banned from online distribution includes "information created or disseminated for the political or economic benefit of oneself or a third party, which incites or encourages crimes such as riots or terrorism through false or manipulated content."

The committee stated, "Although the bill outwardly claims to prohibit the spread of false or manipulated information, it blatantly reveals its intention to completely block criticism of candidate Lee Jae Myung and his family online. This is a gag law and an unconstitutional outrage that directly infringes on the people's freedom of expression. Freedom of expression cannot be restricted for the sake of a particular politician and his family."

The committee also called for the immediate withdrawal of the bill, stating, "Democracy can only be maintained when criticism is allowed," and added, "The Democratic Party must stop its arrogance and hypocrisy and put an end to its abuse of power immediately."
