"Lee's Son Gambled 232 Million Won Without Fixed Income"
On May 31, the People Power Party announced plans to file a criminal complaint, claiming that the source of illegal gambling funds used by the son of Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, remains unclear.
Joo Jinwoo, head of the People Power Party's "Lee Jaemyung Family Corruption Investigation Task Force," held a press conference at the National Assembly on the same day and stated, "Today, we will file a criminal complaint with the Supreme Prosecutors' Office against candidate Lee Jaemyung and his eldest son on charges including evasion of gift tax."
According to the task force, Lee Jaemyung's eldest son possessed only 3.9 million won in total assets and had no fixed income. Nevertheless, it is alleged that he engaged in gambling amounting to 232 million won.
Joo stated, "The gambling was on such a large scale that as much as 11.55 million won was deposited in a single day," and added, "The fact that such a large sum was deposited in just one day can only be seen as a suspicious financial transaction."
He further emphasized, "Presidential candidates and their families must be subject to scrutiny," and added, "Despite being given ample opportunity to explain, they have remained completely silent, so we must reveal the truth through legal action."
Additionally, Joo pointed out, "A Democratic Party lawmaker has proposed the so-called 'Lee Jaemyung Family Defamation Prohibition Act,'" and criticized, "It is an attempt to infinitely expand restrictions in an arbitrary manner."
Democratic Party lawmaker Jo Incheol previously proposed amendments to the law that would define as illegal information any content that creates or spreads false or manipulated information for the political or economic benefit of oneself or a third party, and incites crimes such as riots or terrorism.
