Selected as the Site for Gyeonggi Province's Public Project
Organic Linkage of Talent Development, Business Incubation, and Research and Development
On May 30, the city of Siheung in Gyeonggi Province announced that it has been selected as the final location for the "Gyeonggi AI Innovation Cluster Establishment Project," an initiative led by Gyeonggi Province. As a result, the city plans to establish the "Gyeonggi Siheung AI Innovation Cluster" at the Jeongwang Eoullim Center.
This project aims to create AI startup spaces within Gyeonggi Province to serve as hubs for artificial intelligence (AI) technology development and the fostering of innovative companies. In this round of applications, a total of four clusters, including Siheung, were selected.
Siheung was chosen as a cluster site due to its high evaluation in several areas: its plans to create a cluster that integrates AI technology with its key industries such as bio, future mobility, and manufacturing; its excellent connectivity with local areas including Jeongwang District, Baegot Free Economic Zone, Wolgot Station Area, and Siheung Smart Hub; and its plans to nurture young AI professionals through collaboration with local talent development institutions such as Seoul National University Siheung Campus, Korea Polytechnic University, Gyeonggi University of Science and Technology, and Gyeonggi Science High School.
The city intends to actively promote the convergence of bio, AI, future mobility, and manufacturing industries, based on its bio-specialized complex, Seoul National University Siheung Campus, and the tentatively named Siheung Baegot Seoul National University Hospital, aiming to advance the overall industrial structure of the city.
In particular, the newly established cluster will be designed to organically link "AI convergence professional training, startup incubation, and research and development" through collaboration with local universities. In partnership with the Siheung Industry Promotion Agency, the city will establish a comprehensive support system for AI startup growth and create a research and development (R&D) hub based on industry-academia cooperation, further enhancing the overall competitiveness of the cluster.
Siheung Mayor Lim Byeongtaek stated, "This selection could become a turning point for Siheung to emerge as a center of the AI industry," adding, "We will build an AI and bio innovation industry startup ecosystem centered around the cluster."
