The Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority announced on the 30th that Jeonnam Governor Kim Youngrok visited the Yeosu Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex site to inspect the progress of the project and listen to challenges faced by stakeholders.

The Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex is a large-scale marine leisure complex currently under development in the Gyeongho-dong area of Yeosu, covering 2.15 square kilometers (approximately 650,000 pyeong), with an investment of about 1.5 trillion won by the Mirae Asset Consortium. Modeled after Sentosa in Singapore, the goal is to establish a comprehensive resort and leisure facility including a resort, golf course, and marina.

The construction of a global hotel, a key infrastructure within the complex, is also progressing smoothly. In December of last year, a global hotel brand was selected, and currently, an international competition is underway to select a design firm.

The hotel will be built with 29 above-ground floors and 307 rooms, and will also include various amenities such as a grand ballroom, seminar rooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and restaurants. After the design is completed, construction is scheduled to begin in April 2026, with the goal of opening in 2029.

The relocation of Gyeongho Elementary School, which was promoted to secure the hotel site, has also been completed. The new school building, constructed with an investment of about 25 billion won, was completed on April 15, and classes are scheduled to begin at the new school in the second semester starting in September.

Koo Chungkon, Commissioner of the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority, stated, "The development of the Gyeongdo area will provide tangible benefits to local residents, such as job creation," and added, "We will do our best to achieve the best possible results by cooperating with all stakeholders."

Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, said, "The Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex development project will elevate the tourism industry in the eastern region, centered on Yeosu, to a new level," and continued, "I will ensure that world-class facilities are established and will request that the project proceeds at the proper pace."
