Gwangju Jungang-dong Figures Include Voters from Other Regions
"Data Interpretation Error... Considering Deleting the Post"
Junho Jung, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea representing Buk-gu Gap in Gwangju, posted on social media that the early voting rate in his constituency had exceeded 90%, but this was found to be inaccurate.
On May 30, Jung stated on Facebook that the early voting rate in Jungang-dong, Buk-gu Gap, Gwangju, had reached 92.51%. The post also included figures showing that 2,977 out of 3,218 registered voters had participated in early voting.
However, these figures represent the total number of early voters who used the Jungang-dong polling station, not just residents of Jungang-dong. Unlike regular voting, early voting can be conducted anywhere in the country, and voters are categorized as either in-district or out-of-district voters.
The early voters at the Jungang-dong polling station include not only residents of Jungang-dong, Buk-gu, but also voters from other regions. Additionally, voters who live in Buk-gu but are registered in different administrative districts are also counted as in-district voters.
As a result, the figure cited by Jung included voters who are not residents of Jungang-dong, making the claim that "the early voting rate among Jungang-dong residents exceeded 90%" inaccurate. It has been confirmed that this figure came from an internal report on in-district early voting trends prepared by the Buk-gu District Office for reference purposes.
A member of Jung's office stated, "It appears there was an error in interpreting the data while trying to highlight the enthusiasm for early voting in the Buk-gu area of Gwangju," adding, "We are considering deleting or revising the post."
